DOTDOC, Your Partner For Respirator Fit Testing in Chicago.
Respirator fit testing ensures a secure mask fit, reducing the risk of inhaling workplace contaminants. Vital for occupational safety, it is especially crucial in industries with potential exposure to airborne hazards like chemicals, dust, or infectious agents.

What is OSHA’s Respiratory Protection Standard?
OSHA's Respiratory Protection Standard is outlined in 29 CFR 1910.134 for general industry and 29 CFR 1926.103 for construction.
Written Program
Employers must establish and implement a written respiratory protection program that includes worksite-specific procedures and addresses the selection, use, and maintenance of respirators.
Medical Evaluation
Before employees use respirators, they must undergo a medical evaluation to ensure they are physically able to wear the selected respirator.
Fit Testing
Employers must conduct fit testing to ensure a proper seal for tight-fitting respirators. Fit testing should be performed initially, whenever a different respirator is used, and periodically thereafter.
Training
Employees must receive training on respiratory hazards, proper use of respirators, limitations of respirators, and maintenance procedures.
Respirator Selection
Employers must select respirators based on the specific hazards present in the workplace. Different types of respirators may be required for different situations.
Use and Maintenance
Employers must ensure that respirators are used correctly and maintained in a clean and functional condition. Employees should also be aware of the importance of proper storage and care for their respirators.
Recordkeeping
Employers must retain records related to medical evaluations, fit testing, and the respiratory protection program for specific periods.
Who Needs Respirator Fit Testing?
Examples of workers who may need OSHA respirator fit testing
Healthcare Workers
Those involved in handling infectious materials or providing medical care in environments with potential airborne hazards.

Construction Workers
Especially those exposed to dust, fumes, or other respiratory hazards on construction sites.

Industrial Workers
Employees in manufacturing or processing plants where exposure to airborne chemicals or particulates is common.

Laboratory Workers
Individuals working in laboratories where exposure to chemicals or biological agents is a concern.

Painters
Those using spray paints or other substances that release airborne particles

Emergency Responders
Firefighters, police, and other emergency personnel who may encounter hazardous materials.

When Does Respirator Fit Testing Need To Be Performed?
Respirator fit testing needs to be performed under the following circumstances:
At least annually
Whenever a different size, style, model, or make of respirator is used
If there are facial changes which may affect the fit of the respirator (such as dental work or significant weight change)

What Are The Two Types Of Respirator Fit Tests?
OSHA's Respiratory Protection Standard outlines the requirements for both qualitative and quantitative fit testing. The choice between qualitative and quantitative fit testing depends on the specific respirator being used and the conditions of use. Here's a general guideline:
Qualitative Fit Testing (QLFT)
Typically used for half-mask respirators and filtering facepieces (disposable masks). Testing relies on the wearer's subjective response to detect a test agent, often a harmless substance with a distinct taste or smell (isoamyl acetate, saccharin, Bitrex, and irritant smoke).
Quantitative Fit Testing (QNFT)
Typically required for full-facepiece respirators or any type of tight-fitting respirator where a high level of protection is necessary. Testing utilizes specialized equipment to numerically measure the concentration of particles both inside and outside the respirator.

How is Qualitative Fit Testing Conducted?
Medical Clearance Before Respirator Use
Each employee must undergo a medical evaluation by a licensed healthcare professional to determine their ability to use a respirator. The medical evaluation questionnaire (MEQ) will be reviewed to determine if further testing is needed before fit testing.
Bring Your Work Mask or Know the Required Type
The employee undergoing fit testing should have their work-used mask available or be aware of the specific mask type required by the employer to ensure testing with the same style.
Pre-Test Prep: Agent Selection, Checks, & Instructions
We then select the appropriate testing agent, conduct an initial fit check, and go over pre-test instructions. (If the employee has facial hair that comes between the sealing surface of the facepiece and the face or that interferes with valve function, you may be asked to trim/shave. Please refer to OSHA’s Respiratory Protection standard, 29 CFR 1910.134, which addresses facial hair and respirator fit.)
Fit Test Execution: Following OSHA Standards
Next, the test agent is introduced and fit test exercises are performed following statute, standards and regulations set forth by OSHA. 5. At the conclusion of the test, documentation is provided.
Documentation & Reminders for On-the-Job Use
Please note that the exact make, size and style respirator that you wore to pass the test should be worn while on the job.
